Nick And His Sax
Ron Nicholas is one of the original “Playboys”, a very popular group that originated in the Napa Valley in 1956 under the name “The Reyals”. This popular band soon became known as the “Band of Choice” performing with many great entertainers of the 50’s and 60’s, including Fats Domino, Ricky Nelson, Chubby Checker, Robby Rydell, Trini Lopez, Kenny Rogers, Duane Eddy, Gene Vincent, The Fleetwoods, Bobby Freeman, The Coachman, The Platters, Louis Prima (just to name a few).
Ron started his career at the age of 15, recording hits, which he sold his rights to. By the age of 17, Ron was doing the saxophone recording work for the Coasters, including such hits as “Yakity Yak”, “Charlie Brown” and “Poison Ivy”. He also appeared on the David Letterman Show twice.
Ron had the privilege of being coached by one of the all-time great saxophonists, Sam Buttera of the Witnesses. He then worked with the Harry James Band, Buddy Rich, Paul Revere and the Raiders and the Ramsey Lewis Trio at such venues as the Cow Palace in San Francisco, all of the major casinos in Reno and toured for years throughout Nevada.
Ron put out two original records with the Playboys, “For Your Love” and “Have You Ever Had the Blues”. They later appeared on several popular television shows including, Dick Clark's American Bandstand, The Steve Allen Show and The Blackjack Wayne Show. He later recorded “On The Road Again” and “Brown Eyed Girl” with his “Northern California’s Award Winning Number One Top Leading Band”. He also recorded two albums at Hyde Street Studio in San Francisco.
Everyone enjoys Ron’s unique saxophone style to which he has added background instrumentals from many professional musicians, and adds his talented vocals to his music as well. He is a crowd pleaser of all ages. He not only brings back all the great memories of the 50's and 60's, but he will remind you of many of the great old standards of the 30's and 40's as well. Ron is a flexible entertainer with a variety of tunes including country, blues, light jazz and old time rock and roll.
